Slide, Powerslide and Drift: Are They the Same? Clear Differences

Slide, powerslide and drift: are they the same?

Not exactly. 'Derrape' (slide) is the umbrella term for any time a car loses grip and slides, accidental or intentional. A powerslide is a slide provoked with the throttle in a rear-wheel-drive car — usually short and deliberate. Drift is a sustained, controlled slide held on purpose through a whole corner or several, balancing throttle and counter-steer. All drift is a slide, but not all slides are drift. A 'trompo' (spin) and a 'donut' are related but different.

This article is currently available in Spanish; a native English version is coming soon. Read the Spanish version or see how to drift a rear-wheel-drive BMW.
