The handbrake in drift: what it's for and how it's used
The handbrake (e-brake) is the most direct way to break rear-axle traction and kick the back of the car out. It's mainly used to initiate a slide in tight, slow corners where throttle alone won't do it, and to re-engage a drift that's falling off. It's a short, firm pull — not something you hold down. Mechanical lever vs hydraulic handbrake differ in bite and consistency, but the concept is the same. This article is currently available in Spanish; a native English version is coming soon.
In class you practice it in a rear-wheel-drive BMW E36 with the instructor riding shotgun, on a closed track, at your own pace. Read the Spanish version or see how to drift a rear-wheel-drive BMW.
