From Spectator to Driver: Your First Drift Run in Buenos Aires

Your First Drift Run, Minute by Minute

You love cars but you have always watched from the sidelines. No car, no manual skills, nobody from the scene. This piece walks you through your first time behind the wheel of a car that slides: the arrival at a closed track outside Buenos Aires, putting on the helmet, the briefing, the slow first laps, and the first real drift, smoke pouring off the rear tyres.

The format is one instructor and one student per run in a rear-wheel-drive BMW E36. You need to know nothing. Drift Intro from $300 USD, full Drift Experience for $500 USD, ARS equivalent shown on the site. The full story is in Spanish.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to drive manual for my first drift run?
No. The instructor helps you with the shifts the whole time and in drifting you shift very little: the car works mostly in second and third gear. If you drive an automatic today, you are ready for your first run. The first ten minutes are basic learning.
What exactly happens when I arrive at the track?
You arrive by car from the city, out to the outskirts of Buenos Aires. It is a closed track, no audience. First you see the BMW E36, then comes the ten to fifteen minute briefing where the instructor explains how everything works, you put on the helmet and get in the car with the instructor riding shotgun. One student per run.
Is it dangerous if I have never done anything like this?
It is a closed track with a professional instructor beside you controlling everything, in a car built for this. Drifting happens at low speeds, 60 to 80 km/h, in an environment designed for you to learn safely. It has nothing to do with street racing: it is the opposite, it is the right place to do it.
How much does it cost to try drift for the first time?
The Drift Intro starts from 300 USD: one run to try it and do your first slides. The full Drift Experience, with more time at the wheel and an edited video, is 500 USD. The site always shows the ARS equivalent next to each price. Payment is in full to reserve your spot.
What does the first drift actually feel like?
For a fraction of a second your brain screams that you lost control, but the car slides sideways, controlled, with the instructor guiding you and smoke rising off the rear tyres. It is the feeling of doing something your brain had filed as impossible for you. You go from watching cars to understanding them from the inside: you crossed the line, you are no longer a spectator.
